The big theaters have some snoozers this week. M. Night Shyamalan is back and his movie ‘The Visit’ is merely ‘Rotten’ over at Rotten Tomatoes. But The Nickelodeon has some good stuff. ‘Do I Sound Gay?’ looks great, and next week they’re screening the whole Apu Trilogy.
This movie looks really good. Featuring David Sedaris, Dan Savage, and George Takei among others, the film takes a funny and lighthearted but serious look at the ‘gay voice’. The Sunday showing also features a post-film discussion with the Director.
Here’s what’s new this week. I really don’t know what ‘The Transporter Refueled’ is about. A truck stop? And the sweet movie ‘Dope’ is re-opening. Check that one out. It’s a bit like if Spike Lee made a John Hughes film. Also don’t miss ‘Mistress America’, from Noah Baumbach and co-written with Greta Gerwig, opening Friday at the Nickelodeon.
You’ll definitely have a hard time choosing what to see this week. Everything opening has gotten good reviews and maybe it’s because it’s late summer but these are all pretty interesting movies. If I had to pick just one I’d probably go with Straight Outta Compton.
Also I’d highly recommend checking out I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story, showing Monday night at the Nickelodeon.
Helmed by Paul Feig, starring Melissa McCarthy and currently sporting a 95% on Rottentomatoes, the James Bond/action movie spoof Spy is the must-see of the week. In addition to that there are a number of cool things going on at the Nickelodeon, including the ridiculous/awesome 80’s Schwarzenegger flick Commando and the Elliott Smith biopic Heaven Adores You.
